Default vienna case repair

Scottie or anyone else versed in the 'Vienna Regulator' (spring driven)

I was brought this clock for repair, mostly because of the broken case. The top pieces are just sitting on it, in several parts. The finial that is sitting on the bottom flat belongs to the lower corner. I'm wondering if the top pieces belong to this clock because mounting position isn't quite obvious. There are also two holes, one in the center of both the top and bottom pieces, that if anyone knows what should be mounted in them please let me know. I've also included the trademark if it's of any help.

Hi,
Top or crest or crown, whichever term seems to fit looks to be appropriate to the clock.Generally they were not permanetely attached. Also the lower center drop (upside down finial) appears to be missing. They are available from a number of suppliers
All in all a nice looking case that should respond well to some tlc.

Thanks for the advise. So nothing belongs in the holes in the center of the top and bottom pieces?

Smudgy, If I am reading you correctly, you are referring to holes where a wood dowel rod is fitted. This is how the top, and finials, are mounted to the case. The pieces are not glued, but should friction fit snug, so the trim pieces can be easily removed.

Are there any unused holes in the top or bottom of the case?
Top piece, even if not original, is very common - matches this period and style of case. Dowels would be inserted in trim. Trim would be inserted in locating holes on case.

The top finial holes have finials for them. The bottom finials are just glued on. The wood on the top of the case is oxidized with no sign of where the top structure (inside the red circle) would be mounted. Also on the center top of the top structure and center bottom of the bottom structure there are holes (marked with red spots) and I don't know what, if anything belongs in them (they could have been used for shipping or some optional decoration).MH vienna marked.jpg

It appears the top crest may be a replacement. In your photo, the top crest does not appear to have the length to cover the top of the case to the correct proportions.

The crest is usable (the color appears to match). Center the crest to the top of the case. Drill 2 holes at the bottom of the crest, and top of the case respectively, glue dowel rods to the bottom of the crest. So the finished crest fits on top of the case. The crest looks like there should be nothing on top of it, the hole is probably an extra unessecary hole.

The bottom hole is for a fat, larger center finial (not too long).

Perhaps the case lost it's original top a long time ago, explaining oxidation.

Just basing my conjectured description above based on what similar clocks looked like as they were originally manufactured. You can search Ebay, or Google Images, to verify. But it does appear the case has been altered, but not seriously innacurate.

from my experience, the tops of most of this type of clock are fixed by a flat piece of wood that is glued to the back of the crown, that fits into an oblong slot in the top moulding. Very often this strap of wood also is used to fix the arched section in place.

I have to go for lunch and will post some sketches later.
