Reading my mind, again, "true". The slot mount was an alternate mode of affixing the top piece. Possibly a slot on top?
See, I'm just not big on drillin' holes in cases for any reason. I'd fix the top piece to the single, pre-existing hole sooner than drill two more. This way you're modifying a piece that was not original anywise.

You are right. "Drill a hole", easy for me to say. Not my case. The original was likely glued, which would explain lack of evidence of top mounting. Sorry about that.

Sorry for taking such a long lunch.

It would really help if you could post some pictures of the top area and the back and underside of the crown section.

(I am still getting used to using a tablet, so the sketches are a bit wobbly!) They give a rough guide to what I said. Some of the better quality clocks had the piece set into the bottom of the crown. Not many had dowels.

the arched crest was probably glued. Some times the horse or eagle, is mounted on an arch, or just onto a moulded cornice. If there was something above the arch, there will be a hole.

Believe it or not, the lower sketch is supposed to represent the top of the clock!

Some also had a cusp shaped extension that indexed a routed slot atop. Many variations.

I'll take another look tomorrow and see about getting another picture (my wife has the camera).

No pictures today, but the case top does have the slot as described, so that question is answered.

Thanks for all the help.

It's possible, as laprade has mentioned that there was an eagle or horse figure above the crest, but I think the clock looks alright as-is (it would look too top-heavy).

The bottom of the case should have 3 finials. One large (fatter) one in the centre (usually cut in half), and 2 smaller ones under the base, lined up with the columns.
