Had lunch with my pal Ming Choi yesterday. Native of Hong Kong, trained at Rolex, and an excellent technician. I mentioned Chinese tourbillons. I am more accustomed with the usual orchard run Chinese movements, and I guess I showed a bit of a bias regarding the Chinese tourbillons. He assures me they are of good quality! I still think I'm gonna hold off.

hey doug, i see you're in alberta.

there's a chinese watch museum in Peace River, which is ONLY 8 1/2 hours north of you.

but you can check it out here:
http://www.rongood.net/amch/index.html

i don't think the drive would be worth it. ;-)
but anyways, there's lots of cool stuff there.

the one on top is something vintage 80s i just liked. the one on bottom is the seagull chronograph movement. it's in an alpha 'newman'.

take care and enjoy.
chinese watches are fun!

My wife bought a Chinese-made Alpha movement a couple years ago that is automatic and it seems fine. My friend recommended the brand and had bought an auto watch from that company, too, but his died in less than one year.

yeah, quality with alpha seems to be hit and miss. i've got two and love them both. one has a chinese movement, the other a miyota. the chinese movement has always and still keeps much better time than the miyota. well, especialy since my kid got hold of it and DROPPED it hard on the floor. now it runs about 7 minutes a day fast.

and it was so pretty, too.
i could just get another miyota movement for about $30 from jules borel though, huh.

Actually, I bought a flying tourbillon watch several years ago with what I believe was a Millionsmart movement. It actually works quite well!! I believe they are a manufacturer and wholesaler. Their website is www.millionsmart.com. As for Alpha watches, I have two and for $60 each were among the best cheap watch purchases I ever made. They have high quality movements which wind and set very smoothly. I was very impressed!!
