Hey Y'all,
Just wondering if anyone could shed some light on my new Gilbert Calendar clock. I mainly bought it because I do not have one similar to it and the case was in good shape. I have an Ithica Calendar clock with double dial, but not a more simpler calendar clock like this one. It is in really good shape, it was very dirty when I got it Sat about lunch this last weekend, but I had the movement cleaned and oiled by Sat night and the case all cleaned up as well. The movement had been serviced once before, several years ago. Several bushings had been replaced and the strike spring replaced. Of course it had gotten pretty dirty since that time, but there was very little wear. Anyhow, got a really good deal on it, and I was thrilled with the end results. I will have to fabricate some of the wood "knobs" that are missing, but nothing major... Any help with model and rarity would be great. Thanks Dan |

Dan: This is the Long Branch. Tran Duy Ly's Gilbert book shows both the calendar model and the non-calendar version, the latter from 1895 catalogue. I presume the calendar model was made at the same time, and that the calendar was an option, as was an alarm. This same case, or similar one, was used for the Elberon calendar clock, shown in Tran for 1901. The Elberon had McCabe's patent calendar movement, which showed the day of the week, the month, and day of the month in the door. Nice looking clock overall.

Thanks Steven for the fast response, found out yesterday from a clock collector friend, that my $85 investment, was definitely worth it. One sold at auction a few years back for over $1K. So I think it was definitely worth it. I do have a couple of finials to replace, but I think I can manage that. Good thing is I have a pretty good inventory of old finials, and knobs etc, that I can use or turn an identical one on a lathe out of the old wood.
I love the mellow gong that this clock has..... It is a very unique sound compared to all my other clocks. Thanks and again, and happy hunting everyone! Dan |

Thanks Bruce,
Yeah, I think I will probably hang onto this one for quite a while. I am very glad I stumbled upon it. The lady at the estate sale said she had someone else interested in it, but they hadn't made it there yet, she had emailed pics etc...... so I guess early bird gets the worm....... Thanks and if I do decide to sell, I'm sure you will see something on the board. Dan |
