It is a shame and a crime.
However, the posting of stories of the theft of timepieces without full description(s) of the piece(s) taken (and, when possible, the serial numbers), is an exercise in futility.

No, Kent, it is not an exercise in futility. You might call it an exercise in the dissemination of news that might be of interest to other residents of those suburbs northeast of London. It might warn them of what is going on in their area and remind them not to be complacent about safeguarding their own valuables. That's hardly an exercise in futility.
Besides, can you really imagine ANY general circulation suburban newspaper publishing a detailed inventory with full descriptions of some 250 watches? As it is, the "GUARDIAN" published a far more detailed account of the theft than I would expect to see in most news sources here in the USA. It's interesting to note that quite near South Woodford, where the theft occurred, is a place called "Walthamstow." Whenever I see that name, I wonder if that's where Dennison stowed his movement inventory;>) BTW Kent, maybe I misinterpreted your comment in my haste to defend the Press. If, by exercise in futility, you meant posting the story on this message board, then you are perhaps correct. However, I think it is still of interest to us, and is a valuable reminder (as if we need it!). Besides, it was of particular interest to me because I have relatives living in the West Essex area and I visited the area back in the 1980's.
